Mathematics 3 — Course Syllabus

MATATAG Curriculum · Key Stage 1 · School Year 2026–2027

This is the English copy of a Filipino document. Grade 3 is taught in the mother tongue under MTB-MLE — this is the last year of it — so syllabus.md is the version a Grade 3 teacher actually uses and the one to treat as authoritative. This copy exists for school heads, division supervisors, and anyone checking the curriculum mapping who does not read Filipino. The learner-facing materials — slides, game, worksheet, wall chart — are Filipino only.

The three-term school year

From SY 2026–2027 the school year is divided into three terms, not four quarters.

The curriculum guide is still organised into four quarters. §4 keeps the CG quarter visible in every row; §5 shows how the four were distributed across the three.


1. Course Description

Grade 3 is the last year of MTB-MLE — from Grade 4 onward, Mathematics is taught in English. So this year is not only content teaching but preparation: a child who is secure in an idea in their first language has something to stand on when the language changes.

Numbers reach 10 000, and that size brings a new demand: reading them accurately is no longer enough. They have to be estimated. Which is nearer to 149 — 100 or 200? That is not a question about a digit; it is a question about distance. The whole of Week 7 is about this, because rounding answers a question unlike any that came before it: not what is correct, but what is close enough.

The multiplication tables are completed. The 6, 7, 8 and 9 tables are what remain, and after Quarter 3 there is no new multiplication table in the whole of schooling.

Area appears. Not as a formula but as covering — how many square tiles will reach across the surface? The formula is derived from that, not handed over.

Probability begins, in its simplest form: certain, impossible, more likely. No numbers, only words — and that is the right starting point.

Examples are local: the number of learners in the whole school, the price of rice per sack, the mass of a bag of tomatoes, the capacity of a water bottle, the area of a yard.


2. Grade Level Standard

Measurement and Geometry (MG) Areas of squares and rectangles in sq. cm and sq. m. Points, lines, line segments and rays. Parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines. Mass in g, kg and mg. Capacity in L and mL. Two-direction translations. Line symmetry.
Data and Probability (DP) Data in tables and single bar graphs, horizontal and vertical. Outcomes of experiments: certain, impossible, more likely, equally likely.

What Grade 3 does not cover: whole numbers beyond 10 000 (Grade 4), dissimilar fractions (Grade 4), decimals (Grade 4), and numerical probability — this year uses words only, no fractions and no percentages.

CG Quarter 1 — Area, Lines, and Numbers to 10 000

Taught in Term 1, weeks 1–9

Performance standards Determine the area of squares and rectangles (MG); recognize and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, and parallel and perpendicular lines (MG); represent, round, compare, and order numbers up to 10 000 (NA).
Performance task (suggested) Close Enough — find five real numbers in the school or barangay that are greater than 100 (learners, chairs, houses, prices). Round each to the nearest ten and to the nearest hundred. For one of them, explain why the two answers differ.

CG Quarter 2 — Mass, Capacity, Addition and Subtraction

Opens in Term 1 (weeks 10–11); finishes in Term 2 (weeks 12–18)

Learning competencies 1. measure mass in grams (g), kilograms (kg) and/or milligrams (mg), using appropriate measuring tools. 2. estimate mass of an object using grams, kilograms, and/or milligrams. 3. compare masses of objects including the use of a balance scale. 4. measure capacity in liters (L) and/or milliliters (mL), using appropriate measuring tools. 5. estimate capacity using liters and/or milliliters. 6. compare capacities of two containers. 7. read and write money in words and using: a. Philippine currency symbols (₱ and PhP) up to ₱10 000, and b. the centavo sign. 8. add numbers with sums up to 10 000, with and without regrouping. 9. estimate the sum of addends with up to 4 digits. 10. solve problems involving addition of numbers with sums up to 10 000, including problems involving money. 11. subtract numbers, where both numbers are less than 10 000, with and without regrouping. 12. estimate the difference of two numbers of up to 4 digits. 13. perform addition and subtraction of 3 to 4 numbers of up to 2 digits, observing correct order of operations. 14. solve problems involving addition and subtraction with 3 to 4 numbers of up to 2 digits, including problems involving money.
Performance standards Measure, estimate and compare mass of objects (MG); measure and estimate capacity (MG); add and subtract whole numbers, including amounts of money, of up to 4 digits (NA).
Performance task (suggested) The Market Scale — bring a real object from home (a bag of rice, a bottle, a fruit). Estimate its mass before measuring it, then write the two side by side. Explain which of the three estimates was furthest from the true value, and why.

CG Quarter 3 — Data, Outcomes, and Multiplication

Opens in Term 2 (weeks 19–22); finishes in Term 3 (weeks 23–26)

Learning competencies 1. collect data from experiments with a small number of possible outcomes (e.g., rolling a die or tossing a coin). 2. present data in tables and single bar graphs (horizontal and vertical). 3. interpret data in tables and single bar graphs (horizontal and vertical). 4. solve problems using data presented in a single bar graph (horizontal and vertical). 5. describe and compare outcomes in real-life situations using the following terms: equally likely, less/least likely, more/most likely, certain, and impossible. 6. multiply numbers using the 6, 7, 8, and 9 multiplication tables. 7. illustrate and apply properties of multiplication for the 6, 7, 8, and 9 multiplication tables: a. one multiplied by any number is equal to the number; b. zero multiplied by any number is zero; c. changing the order of the numbers being multiplied does not change the product; d. changing the grouping of the numbers being multiplied does not change the product; and e. multiplying the sum of two addends by a number is the same as the sum of the products of a number by each addend. 8. multiply numbers with and without regrouping: a. 2- to 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number, and b. 2- to 4-digit numbers by a number whose leading digit is the only non-zero digit, with products up to 10 000. 9. estimate the product of 2- to 3-digit numbers by 1- to 2-digit numbers by estimating the factors using multiples of 10. 10. solve 1- to 2-step multiplication problems, including problems involving money. 11. determine the missing term/s in a pattern with repeating and increasing components or repeating and decreasing components. 12. explain how to generate a given pattern with repeating and increasing components or repeating and decreasing components.
Performance standards Present and interpret data in tables and single bar graphs (DP); describe and compare outcomes of events (DP); multiply using 6, 7, 8, and 9 multiplication tables (NA); illustrate and apply properties of multiplication (NA); multiply numbers with and without regrouping (NA); estimate products of two numbers by first rounding to the nearest multiple of 10 (NA); find a missing term and generate patterns (NA).
Performance task (suggested) Certain, Impossible, or Likely — write five events that happen inside the school: one certain, one impossible, and three in between. Order the three from least to most likely, and explain the order. No numbers required.

CG Quarter 4 — Division, Fractions, and Symmetry

Taught in Term 3, weeks 27–33

Content standards 1. division using the 6, 7, 8, and 9 multiplication tables; 2. division of 2- to 4-digit numbers; 3. estimation of quotients by first rounding the divisor and dividend to the nearest multiple of 10; 4. addition and subtraction of similar fractions; 5. line symmetry; 6. resulting figure after a translation.
Learning competencies 1. illustrate division through equal jumps on the number line and as inverse of multiplication. 2. divide numbers using the 6, 7, 8, and 9 multiplication tables. 3. find the missing number in a number sentence involving multiplication or division by 6, 7, 8, and 9 (e.g., __ × 7 = 56; 56 ÷ __ = 7). 4. divide numbers with and without remainder: a. 2- to 3-digit numbers by 1-digit number without remainder, b. 2-digit numbers by 1-digit number with remainder, and c. 2- to 4-digit numbers by 10, 100, and 1000. 5. estimate the quotient of 2- to 3-digit numbers divided by 1- to 2-digit numbers, using multiples of 10 or 100 as appropriate. 6. solve division problems involving 2- to 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number, including problems involving money. 7. represent fractions that are equal to one and greater than one using models. 8. add and subtract similar fractions using models. 9. describe and draw the effect of a two-direction multi-step slide (or translation) in basic shapes and figures. 10. identify shapes or figures that show line symmetry by drawing the line of symmetry. 11. complete a figure that is symmetric with respect to a line.
Performance standards Use the 6, 7, 8, and 9 multiplication tables to divide numbers (NA); divide 2- to 4-digit numbers (NA); estimate quotients (NA); add and subtract similar fractions (NA); identify a symmetrical shape and draw the line of symmetry (MG).
Performance task (suggested) Half a Face — find a real object in the school that is symmetrical (a leaf, a flag, a door, a face). Draw half of it, then have the child beside you complete the other half. Compare the finished drawing with the real object and say where it does not match.

The competency easiest to skip past is Quarter 3 number 5describe and compare outcomes. There is no calculation in it, so it is easy to leave out. It is the first probability in a child's whole schooling, and it is the road that leads to Grade 9. Teach it with real coins and dice, not pictures.


5. Scope and Sequence by Term

Thirty-three teaching weeks, eleven per term — an even split this syllabus chose.

⚠️ The real terms are not even. DO No. 009, s. 2026 is reported to give 54 / 55 / 61 teaching days out of 201 class days — roughly 34 weeks split 11 / 11 / 12. The Budget of Work should decide this, and it has not been obtained.

Each of the 51 competencies appears exactly once. Seventeen weeks pair two adjacent competencies — marked ⊕.

The table below is this repository's suggestion. The Grade 3 Budget of Work is not held (source-catalogue.md). Change it freely.

All 51 competencies are placed. Nothing is repeated and nothing is left hanging.

Two things about the sequence above should be said plainly.

Week 1 carries three competencies, and it is the only week in Quarter 1 that does. That is because all three are recognize and draw — no calculation, and they sit next to one another. If the class is weak with a ruler, split it across two weeks and merge Weeks 8 and 9.

Week 7 is deliberately placed after Week 6. You cannot round a number whose places you cannot see, so place value comes first. Comparing and ordering are deliberately in Weeks 8 and 9 as well: rounding is a question about which is nearer, and nearer is a comparison. Reverse the order and the connection is lost.


6. Assessment and Grading

Grade 3 is still numerically graded in SY 2026–2027 and in SY 2027–2028. It is the last grade to move to descriptive grading, in SY 2028–2029.

The weights — and what we do not know

This repository does not hold the weights for Grade 3, and it will not invent them.

The 20% / 50% / 30% reported in DO No. 015, s. 2026 is attributed to Key Stages 2 and 3 — Grades 4 to 10. Grade 3 is Key Stage 1.

An Electronic Class Record was published for Grades 2 and 3 only within Key Stage 1 — itself evidence that they are numerically graded — but it was not obtained. See source-catalogue.md.

So the teacher enters the three percentages in class-record.html, and it refuses to produce a grade until the three add to 100.

Written Work, Performance Task and Exam remain as the sources of evidence. Formal written testing at Key Stage 1 should be limited and developmentally appropriate — the papers in assessment.md are 20 items, not 40.
