Grade 3 Mathematics

Rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand — CG competency 12. A complete, classroom-ready artifact set, verified against the official curriculum guide. Everything here runs offline. The learner-facing materials are in Filipino, as MTB-MLE requires through Grade 3 — this is the last year of it; these teacher documents are the English copies.

The idea this week has to establish

149 is 49 away from 100 and 51 away from 200. So the answer is 100, not 200. But many children will point at the 4, think “five and up”, and answer 200 — or worse, round to the nearest ten first (150) and then to the hundred (200). Two steps, and a wrong answer. Rounding is not a question about a digit; it is a question about distance.

The whole week, in the format you file. Five days: which is nearer, the nearest ten, once only, from the original, the nearest thousand, then the game and the check. Day 3 is given over entirely to chain rounding.

Day 1, at teaching depth. Timed to the minute. The class votes in the first six minutes and the vote is left unsettled until minute 18 — and then it is settled by measuring, not by arguing. Seven anticipated misconceptions, including the one the strongest children ask: “is a rounded number wrong?”

A Table of Specifications, three complete papers with answer keys and marking notes, a weekly check, and four rubrics. 20 items, not 40. Item 9 of Paper 2 is the one that surprises: 149 to the nearest thousand is 0, not 1 000. It also carries the five descriptive levels for SY 2028–2029, when Grade 3 moves off numerical grading — the last grade to do so.

3.3Offline Activities

Three individual options and two group options. The floor number line is at the centre of all of them — children measure the distance with their feet, not their eyes. In Ang Pagtatalo (the dispute) a group judges another child's answer, and four of the eight are correct, so they are forced to measure all of them.

+Class Record

Enter raw scores, get the grade. But it supplies no weights — this repository does not hold the Key Stage 1 weights, so the teacher enters the three percentages and the record refuses to produce a grade until they add to 100. Saves nothing, sends nothing.

3.1Slide Presentation

13 slides timed to the lesson plan. Length, not colour, carries the meaning: the two parts of the line are divided by a rule, so which one is shorter still reads on an old projector.

3.2Interactive Game

Alin ang Mas Malapit? (which is nearer?) — three rounds: which candidate is nearer, round to the unit asked for, and judge another child's answer. The numbers are deliberately chosen to be caught by chain rounding: left to chance only three in every hundred are affected — and that trap is the whole lesson.

The one artifact a learner actually holds. Printable A4. There are two boxes for the distances before every answer — with a single blank, it is a 50-50 guess. All five numbers in Section D are ones that chain rounding gets wrong.

Verified against the official CG

Standards and competencies are quoted from the official MATATAG Mathematics Curriculum Guide (DepEd, August 2023) — Grade 3 sits on pages 21 and 34–38. Every distance and every rounded answer in every artifact was recomputed by script, and the game was exercised over 150,000 questions — including an independent calculation of the chain-rounded result, to confirm that the wrong answer is always on the board.

How the week fits together Day 1 runs the lesson plan with the slides — or Alin ang Mas Malapit? (I-1) if there is no projector. Day 2 is the nearest ten, and the discovery that one number has two answers. Day 3 is once only, from the original (I-3). Day 4 is the nearest thousand and the exact half. Day 5 is Ang Linya sa Sahig (G-1), then the weekly check.
