Science 5 — Does It Keep Its Shape? Does It Keep Its Space?
Two questions, asked in that order, name all three states of matter. Does it keep its own shape when you move it? Does it keep its own space? Sand answers no and yes, which is why half of every class calls it a liquid — and why the curriculum defines the three states by shape and volume together rather than by either one alone.
The set for this week
Every item is one file. It opens with a double-click, works with the Wi-Fi off, and copies to a phone or a USB stick.
Course Syllabus
For the teacher. The full year on the three-term calendar. All 40 CG competencies across four domain quarters, with the quarter's required performance task given its own week.
Lesson Plan — ILAW
For the teacher. The whole five-day week in the format DepEd prescribes for filing. Day 2 is the sand session, which is the one that decides whether the definition landed or was memorised.
Lesson Plan — Lesson Exemplar
For the teacher. Day 1 at teaching depth. A jar of sand is poured from container to container in minute nine and the class is asked to defend an answer it will have to abandon. Seven anticipated misconceptions.
Assessment Pack
For the teacher. A Table of Specifications, two tests with keys, a weekly check, and rubrics for all four quarterly performance tasks — which the Science guide requires rather than suggests.
Class Record
For the teacher. Raw scores in, grade out, at 20 / 50 / 30 under DO 015 s. 2026. Transmutation is a year switch, not a constant. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent.
Slides
For the class. Fifteen slides. The particle pictures are drawn to scale for spacing, so a gas is not a solid with wider gaps and the same picture.
Shape and Space
For the class. Three rounds of escalating demand. Round 2 is nothing but the awkward cases — sand, smoke, honey, foam — and Round 3 asks whether a thing you cannot see can have mass.
Offline Activities
For the teacher. Three individual and two group activities needing nothing but bottles, sand, water and a balloon. Every group member has a named role, and both group activities work in a class of 45.
Learner Worksheet
For the class. One A4 page per learner. Two columns of yes and no name the state without the learner having to remember which is which — and the last item asks them to explain why sand is not a liquid.
Two Questions at a Time
For the class. A different route to the same competency, not a shorter one. Four tasks, each with a worked example above it, starting from pouring things rather than from the three words.
Wall Chart
For the class. A4 landscape, printable and laminatable. The two questions and the three answers, legible after a black-and-white photocopy.
