Common Misconceptions

Term 1 Week 9 · Composing and decomposing numbers to 10 · CG Quarter 1, competency 10

#The misconceptionWhere it showsWhat to do
1 Adding new stones Takes extra stones to make a "new way" "Ilan ang bato natin? Lima lang. Bilangin muli. Hindi tayo kukuha ng bago — ililipat lang natin." (How many stones do we have? Only five. Count again. We do not take new ones — we only move them.)
2 Losing the whole Sees 3 and 2 but no longer remembers the 5 Push the two piles back together with both hands, then count. Repeat every single time.
3 Counting parts, not objects Answers two to "ilan lahat" "Dalawa ang tumpok — tama. Pero ilan ang bato? Bilangin natin lahat." (Two piles — correct. But how many stones? Let us count them all.)
4 Only one way Always 4 and 1 "Ilipat mo pa ang isa. Ano ang bago?" (Move one more. What is new?) Do not give the answer.
5 Forgetting zero Asked how many ways, leaves out 5 and 0 Put all the stones on one side. "Ilan sa kabila? Wala. Bilang din ba ito? Oo — sero." (How many on the other side? None. Does that count too? Yes — zero.)
6 Thinking 2 and 3 differs from 3 and 2 Counts them as two different things Turn the paper 180°. "Ano ang nagbago? Wala. Ikaw lang ang lumipat." (What changed? Nothing. Only you moved.) This is already competency 12.
