Twelve Pesos
Per What?

A slope is a rate — and a rate has a unit

Week 7 · Day 1 CG Quarter 1 · competency 8 45 minutes

Answer out loud. Every answer carries its unit.

A car goes 240 km in 3 hours80 kilometres per hour
3 kg of rice costs ₱18060 pesos per kilogram
A jeepney does 96 km on 8 litres12 kilometres per litre

If a learner says just “80” — ask “eighty what?” and wait.

A tricycle charges
₱30 to start
₱12 for every kilometre

Build the table together

Distance (km)0125
Fare (₱)30425490
Which number in that table is the slope?

It is not in the table. Let them hunt before you say so.

y = 12x + 30

Two numbers. They are not the same kind of thing.

Interrogate them one at a time

the 12
a RATE
12 pesos per kilometre
pesos per something
the 30
an AMOUNT
30 pesos
just pesos — not per anything

The zero: when is the fare nothing?

12x + 30 = 0
12x = −30
x = −2.5
Minus two and a half kilometres.
What does that mean?
Let them try first — then say it plainly

It means nothing. The number is correct and the situation is impossible. That is a complete answer, and you are allowed to give it.

A drum holds 200 litres. It drains at 25 litres per minute.

Write the equationy = 200 − 25x
What is the slope?−25 — negative, it falls
Its unit?litres per minute
Find the zero200 − 25x = 0, so x = 8
What does 8 mean?The drum is empty after 8 minutes

Same mathematics. Same steps.

ZeroWhat it means
Tricycle   y = 12x + 30−2.5 nothing
Drum   y = 200 − 25x8 empty after 8 minutes

Only you can tell which — because only you know what x stands for.

Circulate with one question, and only this one

Per what?

1 A SLOPE IS A RATE. Its unit is y-units per x-unit.
2 A ZERO IS AN x-VALUE. It may or may not mean something.
3It means nothing here” is a correct answer.
Twelve pesos per what?

One more, quickly: the wage row

y = 80x  →  zero is 0

And that one does mean something — no hours worked, no pay. So a zero of zero is not automatically meaningless either. Every case is judged on its own.

Every context today told you the rate in words.
Tomorrow: a line on squared paper and no words at all.
How will you find the rate then?

Exit ticket

A candle is 24 cm tall. It burns 3 cm every hour.
  1. Write the equation.   y = ____________
  2. What is the slope? ______   Its unit? ____________
  3. Find the zero.   x = ______
  4. What does the zero mean here? ____________________

Quarter sheet. Name at the top. Read the unit in item 2 before anything else — a blank there is the whole lesson missing, however good the rest looks.
